What are Pies?
Pies are a baked food having a filling of fruit, meat, pudding, etc.! Prepared in a pastry-lined pan or dish and often topped with a pastry crust: Pecan Pie,apple pie, meat pie and many more fillings.
The Pecan Pie
Pecan pie is an American creation. Pecans are native to North America; the nuts were propagated by Native Americans as far north as Illinois and the southern part of Iowa.
Pecans grew along areas watered by the Mississippi River, spreading a bit to the east into Alabama. Following the Civil War, commercial developers brought in a few varieties of pecans to grow in Georgia (the state is now the main commercial grower of pecans in the U.S.). Pecan trees also became prevalent in Louisiana in the mid to late 1800s. The name of the nut itself is derived from the French word pacane, which is taken from the Algonquian word for “nut.” Some believe the French invented the pecan pie after settling in New Orleans, though there’s seemingly little evidence to support it.
The Apple Pie
“There are very few things as American as apple pie, as the saying goes!” But like much of America’s pie tradition, the original apple pie recipes came from England. Pre-Revolutionary prototypes were made with unsweetened apples and encased in an inedible shell. Yet the apple pie did develop a following, and was first referenced in the year 1589, in Menaphon by poet R. Greene: “Thy breath is like the steeme of apple pies.
